Sweet n’ Sour Chicken


Sauces can make or break your dish. It’s also difficult to find a sauce you like without trying 20 different variations before you make the right one. I am here to tell you I have found THEE perfect sweet n’ sour sauce. Your search for the sweet n’ sour sauce of your dreams ends with this blog post.

This sauce only requires a few simple ingredients and just a short amount of time. This is an easy to make dinner for a busy family.DSC01124

Serving Size: 2

Time: 30 minutes


  • 1 package of chicken breasts (1.5-2 lb)
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 3 heads of broccoli
  • 1/2 of an onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger

Sweet n’ Sour Sauce

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 4 tbs ketchup
  • 1 tbs soy sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder or garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp cornstarch


  1. Cut the broccoli into smaller florets and chop the onions.
  2. Add the broccoli, onion, 1/4 cup water, 3 tbsp olive oil, black pepper, 1/4 tsp of garlic powder, and 1/2 tsp of ground ginger to a pan with a lid on medium to high heat. The water will help to steam the vegetables. You could use a food steamer if you’d like, but I find that steaming them can make them too soft and soggy.
  3. Cook for 15-20 minutes until you can stick a fork through the broccoli with a little resistance.
  4. Cut the chicken breasts down to bite size pieces.
  5. Add the chicken and 1 tbs of olive oil to a separate pan that is also on medium to high heat.
  6. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and cook for about 10-12 minutes.
  7. Cook the cup of rice according to the box’s instructions
  8. In a medium size bowl, add the brown sugar and distilled white vinegar. Whisk together
  9. Then add the ketchup, soy sauce, garlic powder, and cornstarch to the bowl and whisk until blended. You may still see that some of the ketchup or cornstarch that don’t want to blend with the other ingredients; once you start to warm it up and stir frequently that will go away.
  10. Add the bowl of wet ingredients to a small pot and put on medium heat until it boils and bring it to a simmer. Stir this frequently.
  11. Assemble first the brown rice and then vegetables, chicken, and sauce. A little bit of sauce goes a long way, so don’t put too much on at once.
